How to compare garment measurements before choosing a size
Reviewed
A size label is a starting point, not a measurement. Two references marked M can have different chest widths, lengths or sleeves. The most useful comparison is between a garment that already fits you and the confirmed measurements for the exact SA reference you are considering.
If a product has no measurement chart, ask for the available measurements on WhatsApp. Do not reuse a chart from another reference or infer fabric, stretch or fit from a brand name alone.
Start with a garment you already wear comfortably
Choose a similar type of garment: compare a hoodie with a hoodie, for example. Lay it flat and smooth it without stretching it. Note the measuring points and units so the seller can compare like for like.
Garment measurements and body measurements are different. A flat chest width is not the same number as a chest circumference. Check the basis stated in the product chart or ask the seller before comparing values.
Compare the same measuring points
For trousers, ask for the waist measurement basis and any other dimensions you need to compare, such as length or hip measurements. For garments with features that affect fit, request the relevant details rather than assuming the same method applies to every style.
| Measurement | What to check |
|---|---|
| Chest or waist | Is this a flat width or a circumference? Use the same method for both garments. |
| Body or trouser length | Ask where the measurement starts and ends, then use those same points on your reference garment. |
| Sleeve | Confirm whether the sleeve is measured from the shoulder seam, neck or another stated point. |
| Units | Keep centimetres and inches separate. When using the chart’s unit switch, compare the same measurement field. |
Read the difference without guessing a size
Compare all the dimensions that matter for your intended fit. If a chart includes a measurement tolerance or a special measuring method, take it into account. Ask for clarification where those details have not been provided.
| Same flat-width method | Chest width |
|---|---|
| Your comfortable hoodie | 58 cm |
| An example listing | 60 cm |
| Difference in flat width | +2 cm |
The example listing is wider at that measuring point. It does not establish sleeve length, body length, stretch, comfort or the correct size for you.
Check layers and matching pieces separately
- If a jacket will be worn over a hoodie, compare both garments. The same size label does not establish enough space for the layers you want to wear.
- For a top-and-trouser listing, check the measurements and included pieces for that reference. Mixing sizes across an order is supported; different sizes within one complete set need confirmation.
- Ask about the confirmed material and construction if those details affect your choice. A photograph does not establish composition, fabric weight or weather protection.
Send a useful sizing question on WhatsApp
Include the SA reference, requested color and size, the measurements of your reference garment, and whether those measurements are flat widths or circumferences. Say which dimension you need confirmed. You can also ask for available close-up or on-body photos; availability depends on the style.
Keep the seller’s answer with the product reference. When choosing more colors or a similar-looking style later, check whether the same measurements apply rather than transferring the answer automatically.
